Perforation Repair in Daphne, AL

A tooth perforation (sometimes called a root perforation or pulpal floor perforation, depending on where it occurs) is a hole that opens up in the root or crown of a tooth, exposing it to the risk of breaking and infection. Perforation repair in endodontics involves disinfecting the tooth and resealing it, creating a stronger, healthier smile. At Eastern Shore Endodontics, Dr. Tres Manasco specializes in a variety of tooth root procedures, including root canals and perforation repair for patients in Daphne, AL. Our team proudly works with patients to create personalized endodontic treatment plans, focusing on each person's comfort and safety above all. If you're dealing with symptoms of pulpal floor perforation, including pain, swelling, or infection, schedule a consultation to discover how we can help.

What Causes a Tooth Perforation?

A tooth perforation can be caused by several factors, ranging from long-term dental issues to sudden accidents. The most common causes include:

  • Deep dental decay: When a cavity is left untreated for too long, the decay can eat through the protective layers of the tooth, eventually creating a hole that reaches the root or the pulpal floor.
  • Traumatic injury: A hard blow to the face or a sudden impact can crack or puncture a tooth, leading to an immediate perforation that requires urgent attention.
  • Complications during dental procedures: Because tooth canals are complex and often very narrow, perforations can occasionally occur during a root canal or other restorative treatments.
  • Resorption: This is a rare process where the body begins to break down and absorb the tooth's own structure, which can eventually create a perforation from the inside out.

Dr. Manasco will start your perforation repair by accessing the area and cleaning out any signs of infection. After that, he'll seal the tooth to prevent bacteria from getting inside and infecting the pulp. In some cases, he may finish by placing a crown to strengthen the tooth. Perforation repair usually takes 1 – 2 hours, and you should experience relatively little discomfort. Afterward, you'll be able to get back to your routine right away, but you should take care to avoid chewing on that tooth until it's fully restored.

Am I A Candidate For Perforation Repair?

Anyone whose tooth has developed a perforation due to trauma, decay, or as a complication of a previous dental procedure may be a candidate for perforation repair. If you are experiencing pain, swelling, or sensitivity in a tooth that has previously undergone a root canal, or if you have recently sustained an injury to a tooth, we recommend scheduling a consultation at Eastern Shore Endodontics. Dr. Manasco will carefully examine your tooth and discuss the best course of treatment to restore your oral health.

Tooth perforation repair offers several important benefits, especially when it comes to saving a tooth that might otherwise be lost. Some of the key benefits of this treatment include:

  • Reduces the risk of oral health complications
  • Prevents the spread of infection
  • Restores your ability to chew in comfort
  • Provides a minimally invasive option for dental restoration

What Are the Symptoms of Tooth Perforation?

Tooth perforation can happen when a small hole forms in the root or side of a tooth, often as a result of deep decay, prior dental treatment, or internal resorption, and the symptoms are not always obvious at first. Many patients in Daphne, AL notice persistent tenderness, sensitivity when biting down, or discomfort that feels different from a typical toothache. You might also see swelling in the gums near the affected tooth, a recurring pimple-like bump, or bleeding around the area that does not improve. In some cases, there is a sudden, sharp pain during a procedure, followed by lingering inflammation. Because a perforation creates a pathway for bacteria to enter the surrounding tissues, it can lead to infection if left untreated. Our team carefully evaluates these concerns using advanced imaging and clinical expertise to determine whether perforation repair is needed and to help protect your natural tooth whenever possible.

No one looks forward to a root canal! However Dr Manasco and his Staff made the experience as tolerable as possible! I had an unusual situation in that the tooth was part of a bridge and they were able to save the bridge so hopefully I won’t have to get a new one. However, what impressed me the most was the Dr called me that evening to check on me to see how the tooth was doing.
