Many patients struggle with dental fears and phobias, especially when it comes to more complex care like endodontic procedures. At Eastern Shore Endodontics in Daphne, AL, we offer nitrous oxide — commonly known as laughing gas —to help make your visit more comfortable and virtually stress-free.

If you have questions such as, "What does laughing gas do?" or "Is nitrous oxide safe?" this helpful guide will explain how it works and what to expect in terms of nitrous oxide side effects. Reach out now to learn how this form of sedation can support a smoother treatment experience.

What does laughing gas do?

Nitrous oxide is a mild inhaled sedative used to ease anxiety during dental care. It's delivered through a small mask and begins working within minutes. Patients typically describe a sense of calm, lightness, or mild euphoria. You remain awake and able to respond to your provider, but the fear and tension you may usually feel are significantly reduced.

Laughing gas is especially helpful for endodontic procedures like root canals, which can be more involved than a routine dental visit. Nitrous oxide helps you stay calm and still while your endodontist performs the necessary treatment.

Is nitrous oxide safe?

So, is nitrous oxide safe? Yes, when administered by trained dental professionals. It has been used for decades in dental practices with an excellent safety record. The gas is easily adjusted and quickly reversible, which means you can return to normal shortly after your procedure, often without needing assistance or recovery time.

At Eastern Shore Endodontics, we will assess your health history and specific needs before recommending nitrous oxide to ensure it's a good fit. For those concerned about nitrous oxide side effects, it's important to know that most effects —such as light-headedness or mild nausea — are short-lived and rare.

Who benefits from nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients who:

  • Experience dental fears and phobias
  • Are undergoing longer or more complex treatments like endodontic procedures
  • Have a strong gag reflex or difficulty staying still during dental treatments
  • Want to feel more relaxed while remaining conscious

What to expect during treatment

If you choose nitrous oxide for your procedure at Eastern Shore Endodontics in Daphne, AL, here's how it works:

  • Before treatment begins, a small mask is placed over your nose
  • Within minutes, you'll begin to feel more relaxed
  • The gas is adjusted throughout the procedure to keep you comfortable
  • Once treatment ends, you'll breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear away the nitrous oxide

Enjoy a more comfortable treatment experience

Dr Manasco did an excellent job on my root canal. He made sure I was comfortable during the procedure. He also called me that evening to make sure everything was going well. His staff was very helpful too.

What a wonderful experience! I know many people cringe at the idea of a root canal, and the name of the procedure does not typically do any favors in comforting those in need of one. However, with Dr. Manasco and his excellent staff there is nothing to fear at all.I felt absolutely no discomfort at any time during the procedure. From the initial shot and throughout the “Root Canal” I was perfectly comfortable. The procedure was much quicker than I expected which I fully attribute to the experience of Dr. Manasco and his staff. I would encourage anybody in need of an endodontist to seek care under Dr. Manasco.Luckily his office accepts my insurance, but to be perfectly honest I would most likely use him even if I had to pay out of pocket. When it comes to dental care I don’t think you can find a more seamless experience than at Eastern Shore Endodontics.Dr. Manasco is the perfect example of a man who has mastered his craft. And for that I could not be more thankful.

I have nothing but great things to say about this place. I drove over an hour for Dr. Tres to do my procedure because their office was highly recommended, and now I see why. From the initial phone call, everything was pleasant. Dr. Tres explained everything in detail, and the dental assistant was so calming and relieved my anxiety. Doc also called me after my procedure to make sure I was doing okay, and you don't find many doctors who will do that. If you need an Endodontist, you will not regret this office!

I highly recommend Dr. Manasco. I had a root canal and it was painless. He is very kind and professional and explained everything before and during the procedure. The staff is also amazing.
